Paracord dog leashes made of several feet of paracord can be unraveled and used if urgently needed in any situation. Typical uses include:
• Securing cargo
• Lashing together poles
• Fixing broken straps or belts
• Attaching equipment to harnesses
• As dummy cords to avoid losing small or important items
• Tying luggage to vehicle racks
• Securing camouflage nets to trees or vehicles
• Assisting with water rescues
The strands of the inner core (“the guts”) can easily be removed and have many uses when finer string is needed. For instance as sewing thread to repair gear or fishing line in a survival situation. The outer nylon sheath is also useful when the inner core is removed, such as for boot laces. To prevent fraying, paracord ends are melted and crimped.
Paracord (parachute cord or Type III, 7-strand, 550 Cord) was originally used in the suspension lines of parachutes. The durability and versatility of the material has proved beneficial for military personnel and civilians as a general purpose utility cord. The all-nylon construction makes paracord fairly elastic. Since nylon does not rot or mildew, it has become known as an all-weather material and is useful in almost any situation where strong cordage is needed. Paracord with a 550 classification can suspend/hold up to 550 lbs. of weight.
